The Garaway Board of Education heard from High School Principal Ryan Taggert concerning graduation requirements for the Class of 2019.
“Right now, we have three students, not including those at Buckeye Career Center, who have a chance of not graduating,” he shared. “We are working with them intensely and will readminister testing in hopes of getting them in line with the new standards. I’m optimistic. We will retest them at the end of December.”
Taggert noted that there are many moving pieces in terms of graduation requirements at the moment, including a bill that could turn the clock back to 2018 graduation requirements that would easily allow all Garaway seniors to graduate right now, without additional testing.
The requirements are a concern for all schools. “The big schools could see as many as 38 – 43 percent of seniors not meet the requirements for a diploma,” Taggert explained.

In an unrelated matter, the board rescinded a contract with East Holmes Local Schools for shared cafeteria manager services. In addition, the board accepted the resignation of Melissa Biltz as full time Child Nutrition Supervisor effective September 30, 2018. Biltz previously served both school districts. Superintendent Jim Millet noted that Biltz is no longer available on a full-time basis. With that information, the board approved a two-year contract with Biltz for 20 hours per week as a part time Child Nutrition Supervisor.
In other action, the board:
APPROVED appropriations totaling $17,287,486.46 for Fiscal Year 2019. Items include: General Fund – $12,781,245; Permanent Improvement – $300,000; Lunchroom – $400,000; Public School Support – $60,000; Other Local Grants – $40,000; Agency Funds – $5,000; Self Insurance Fund – $2,750,000; Student Activity Accounts – $125,000; Athletic Funds – $100,000; Data Communications – $9,000; Title VI B – $250,000; Title I – $390,000; Title IIA – $50,000; Title IV – $27,241.46.
ACCEPTED a grant of $6,554 from the Ohio Department of Education for safety.
ACCEPTED a grant of $3,000 from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for Youth Literacy.
ACCEPTED a donation of $1,909.67 from the Wayne Township Fire Department for a fence at Dundee Elementary School.
ACCEPTED a donation of $500 from the Pirate Moms for the Athletic Department’s Huddle Program.
ACCEPTED a donation of $100 from Stacy Lee for Building and Grounds.
APPROVED a preventative maintenance contract with Henry Heating and Cooling at a cost of $5,070 for FY 2019.
APPROVED Sugarcreek Builders to install seven doors at Dundee Elementary at a total estimated cost of $3,500.
APPROVED pest control services with Central Exterminating Company for FY 2019 at a cost of $2,120.67.
APPROVED a shared services agreement with East Holmes for transportation services from Garaway to Beacon Hill Community School during the 2018-19 school year.
APPROVED setting the cost of reserve seating tickets of $35 per seat per season for home football games. This is an addition to regular season passes.
APPROVED the eighth grade Washington DC trip for May 8 – 10 through Main Street Tours.
APPROVED an agreement with East Central Ohio ESC for audiology services during the 2018-19 school at an estimated cost of $1,616.84.
ACCEPTED the resignation by reason of retirement of Dennis Koshmider as Head Varsity Girls Softball Coach. Koshmider had over 200 wins in the program.
APPROVED the following mentors for 2018-19: Sherry Bichsel for Kayla Schlabach; Lindsay Marquis for Emily Miller and Rachel Duncan; Val Hershberger for Julie Rest and Lucas Immel; Luann Wieland for Kynslie Thorndike; Jill Starner for Darrin Yosick and Christian Grove.
APPROVED the following supplemental contracts: James Monigold – Boys Basketball Coach – JV / Freshmen; Brooks Numbers – Boys Basketball Coach JV / Freshmen; Darren Yosick – Boys Basketball Coach JV / Freshmen; Darren Raber – Eighth Grade Boys Basketball Coach; Zeb Troyer – Seventh Grade Boys Basketball Coach; Tim Mullet – Girls Basketball Coach JV Assistant; Zach Mottice – Girls Basketball Coach JV Assistant; Scott Putt – Eighth Grade Girls Basketball Coach; Donald Sundheimer – Seventh Grade Girls Basketball Coach.
