Coshocton KOA and McPeek’s Mighty Maze are buttoning up plans for the first Sunflower Festival.
Visitors to the festival will get to explore over three acres of sunflowers, showcasing 20 varieties of flowers. “We want to bring new ideas and fun to our community,” said Ryan McPeek, co-owner of Coshocton KOA. “Several of our friends had been encouraging us to plant a sunflower field and the idea grew on us.”
And the idea is growing, literally. “We planted four unique areas of the field to create a beautiful display you can’t find anywhere else,” McPeek said.
At the entrance of the field, there are display plots showcasing 10 varieties of sunflowers. The Sea of Yellow is a huge field of 5-6 ft tall classic yellow sunflowers. The Land of Giants includes towering 12-foot-tall sunflowers that are made into teepee-like structures. Fuzzy dwarf Teddy Bear sunflowers surround the towering sunflower houses. The Wilds features a jungle of all the different sunflower types. In addition to the classic yellow colors, guests will find a mixture of lime, plum, red, and fiery orange.
In The Wilds and the Sea of Yellow, guests may each cut a sunflower, which is included with every ticket, or pick their pre-purchased 6, 12, or 18 sunflowers from a mixture of 20 different varieties.
Tickets are available for purchase at www.ohiosunflower.com. Pre-purchased tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Each ticket includes admission, a wagon ride to the fields, and one sunflower of the guest’s choice, plus access to the kids fun park, food trucks, and vendors. Tickets are limited and must be purchased online to ensure admission to the event.
The festival will last for three days, August 17 – 19. Hours are as follows: August 17 – 4 – 9 p.m.; August 18 – 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; August 19 – Noon – 6 p.m.
