Pearl Valley sweeps Ohio State Fair Contest

Pearl Valley swept the contests as part of the second competition to determine the 2018 Grand Champion Cheesemaker.

The Ohio Swiss Cheese Association held its second contest of the year to determine the Grand Champion Cheesemaker. The Ohio State Fair Contest was won by Pearl Valley Cheese of Fresno. For the Ohio State Fair, Pearl Valley Cheese received the Grand Champion rosette for their Swiss cheese and the Reserve Champion rosette for their Emmentaler cheese. Specific winners were:

Rindless Swiss
First Place – Blue Ribbon – Pearl Valley Cheese
Second Place – Red Ribbon – Guggisberg Cheese
Third Place – White Ribbon – Bunker Hill Cheese

Other Swiss
First Place – Blue Ribbon – Pearl Valley – Emmentaler
Second Place Red Ribbon – Guggisberg Cheese – Baby Swiss
Third Place – White Ribbon – Pearl Valley Cheese - Lacey Baby

Mild Cheddar
First Place – Blue Ribbon – Middlefield Original Cheese – Mild Cheddar
Second Place – Red Ribbon – Bunker Hill Cheese – Raw Milk Cheddar
Open Class
First Place – Blue Ribbon – Pearl Valley Cheese – Gouda
Second Place – Red Ribbon – Black Radish Creamery, Columbus – Buckhorn Aged Farmhouse
Third Place – White Ribbon – Middlefield Original Cheese – Pepper Jack
Other cheese was entered by Bunker Hill Cheese – Amish Butter and Pepper Jack; Guggisberg Cheese – Amish Butter; Pearl Valley - Marble, Colby; Black Radish Creamery – Shenanigans Raw Milk Aged Tomme, Bankston Bloomy Rind; Blue Jacket Dairy – Bokengehalas.

Soft and Spreadable
First Place – Blue Ribbon – Blue Jacket Dairy – Lemon Quark
Second Place – Red Ribbon – Bunker Hill Cheese - Creamy Feta

All cheese entered was judged Grade A and was on display at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus. Judges for the contest were Mike Felton, former cheesemaker, Mark Coblentz, cheese buyer, Chad Proper, quality control and sales and Paul Chervenak, cheese buyer.
