While he has had plenty of great ideas, for instance proposing to his wife and accepting the position of assistant vice-president and banking center manager for The Commercial & Savings Bank, Ben Hershberger also had a really bad idea one time that involved a thunderstorm and a metal rowboat.
After returning home for the summer from Bluffton University, where he was attending college, Hershberger and a buddy had decided to go fishing one day on a private pond. The pond was located in a valley and surrounded by tall trees, so the two fishermen didn’t even notice the dark clouds making their way across the sky until it was too late.
“We were young, kind of bozos, didn’t have smartphones to check weather or anything,” he recalled. As the sky began to grow darker, Hershberger and his friend noticed the fish started biting better, and so they just kept on fishing.
“Next thing we know, we were just getting dumped [on] like a wall of rain hit us,” Hershberger recalled. “We’re rowing as fast as we can, and then the lightening starts going. To say the least, it was pretty sketchy.”
The two were drenched from head to toe but were fortunate to make it out of the situation unharmed. While Hershberger still enjoys fishing, being sure to check the weather forecast first is a lesson he won’t soon forget.
